The Hawai‘i Tumor Registry (HTR) maintains a confidential database of information on all cases of cancer and benign brain tumors and many blood disorders diagnosed in the State of Hawai‘i. It provides complete cancer reporting for the entire state and serves as a resource for all population-based epidemiologic cancer research and cancer control activities in Hawai‘i. In its years of operation, HTR has been the sole and authoritative source of cancer data and information for residents of Hawai`i. Its data are published and used for local, national and international research efforts. HTR was established in 1960 by the Hawai‘i Medical Association (HMA), the Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) and the Hawai‘i Pacific Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Presently, HTR is jointly operated by the Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i and DOH. Since 1973, HTR has received its primary financial support from the National Cancer Institute and is a member of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (NCI/SEER) Program, with additional funding from DOH.
The HTR database contains more Native Hawaiian cases than any other registry nationwide. It also contains sizable numbers of Caucasian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and Pacific Islander cases, as well as smaller numbers of other ethnic groups. This racially diverse database has been invaluable in demonstrating ethnic variations in cancer incidence and survival. Its use by hospitals and physicians who are interested in cancer statistics and by CRCH research staff has resulted in numerous projects and publications in national professional journals. As one of the 18 NCI/SEER regions nationwide, HTR provides detailed information on more than 6,660 new Hawai‘i cases of cancer diagnosed annually, while also collecting annual follow-up data on all diagnosed Hawai‘i patients until their demise. Currently, the HTR database contains more than 179,757 cases diagnosed between 1960-2006.
Hawai`i
Cancer Facts & Figures published in 2003-2004 is a 56 page booklet describing the
burden of cancer in Hawai‘i from 1975-2000. (A new version of the publication covering diagnosis years 1975-2006 is anticipated by Fall of 2009). The publication
provides an overview of cancer,
a
discussion of the impact of gender, age and racial/ethnic disparities in
cancer, and an analysis of six major cancer sites by
race/ethnicity.
Hawai`i Cancer Facts & Figures 2003-2004 also provides a review of cancer prevention and early detection issues and a special section on resources available through the three organizations who partnered to produce the publication: the American Cancer Society, Hawai`i Pacific Inc., the Hawai`i Tumor Registry of the Cancer Research Center of Hawai`i, and the Hawai`i Department of Health.
Hawai`i Cancer Facts & Figures 2003-2004 is designed to assist health care organizations, health professionals, community groups, and others who are working to reduce the cancer burden throughout Hawai‘i. It may also be of interest to policy-makers, patient advocates, and news organizations who seek detailed, easy-to-read information about the burden of cancer in Hawai`i. It can serve as a useful tool in community-based participatory planning and in implementing collaborative and comprehensive cancer control programs in our state.
