Nobel Laureate Joins Cancer Education Events with Local Health-Care Partners
March 8, 2010
“Liver cancer affects more families in Hawai‘i than any other state in the nation. Our researchers are seeking answers to find a cure.”-- Michele Carbone, director, Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i

Nobel Prize winner and internationally renowned cancer expert Baruch Blumberg, MD, PhD, is participating in local events aimed at raising awareness about liver and other cancers prevalent in Hawai‘i. The effort is directed by the UH Manoa Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i and The Queen’s Medical Center.
Dr. Blumberg is a Distinguished Scientist at Fox Chase Cancer Center and professor of medicine and anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In 1976, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for the discovery of the Hepatitis B Virus, and later developed the first vaccine for Hepatitis B, a pre-existing condition that can lead to liver cancer. Hawai‘i has the highest incidence of liver cancer in the nation.
“Dr. Blumberg’s research has literally saved millions of human lives around the world,” said Michele Carbone, director of the Cancer Research Center. “We are extremely privileged to have a scientist of his renown here in Hawai‘i, where he can share his expertise with our own scientists dedicated to liver cancer research.”
